A Winning End

Saturday 26th November
vs. Scarisbrick JFC 7-1

Team (first half): Ciarán B; Tom, Joe, Lewis, Adam; Danny, Jacob, Caleb, Josh; Elliot, Cormac.

Team (second half): Ciarán B; Elliot, Danny, Josh, Matty; Tom, Lewis, Ciarán S, Adam; Joe, Cormac.

Perhaps we all should have expected it but once again Scarisbrick were unable to muster a full team for this end of season encounter. With only eight players and an Under 14 brother, they had to borrow players to make it a match, with Matty and Ciarán S playing against their team mates in the first half and Caleb and Jacob changing sides for the second.

The other outcome was that the lack of full opposition – who also turned up 15 minutes late – means that the match was forfeited and the boys are credited with a 3-0 victory, which denies Adam’s moment of glory as he scored four goals in the second half.

The boys scored twice in a first half that they dominated. Josh put them in the lead after 7 minutes as the keeper could only put Caleb’s shot into the air, and Jacob and Josh followed in to bundle it over the line.

Caleb’s ball through the defender’s legs had set up Danny to shoot into the side netting in the 4th minute and Danny then saw his team mate – normally – prevent a goal as Matty cleared off the line but he finally got his goal in the 15th minute as his run on the right created the space for a shot that went through the keeper.

The first half was a good work out for the defence, as the Scarisbick forward line was the ever-nippy Ciarán S and the overage player but they held firm as Joe and Lewis covered the breaks.

The second half started with a bang as Adam’s shot – or was it a cross? – extended the lead two minutes into the half. Ciarán S was prevented twice, the second time from Joe’s break down the wing, but Joe was on hand after 34 minutes to send another low ball in from Adam to tap home.

Scarisbrick’s goal had an element of luck as Ciarán B slipped over trying to take a corner, leaving the forward with a tap-in – but the four goal lead was restored in the 40th minute as Adam shot through a crowded box to complete his hat-trick.

The keeper’s slip was forgotten a minute later as his deep kick bounced through to reach Joe who belted it first time into the corner of the net with the keeper a spectator to make in 6-1.

Caleb nearly embarrassed his team mates, with Josh’s tackles needed prevent him from scoring, but Tom and Ciarán S came close to scoring as concerted pressure caused chaos at the back for chaos. Tom played a major part in the final goal, after 49 minutes, as his quick throw-in gave Adam the chance to dribble through and score his fourth goal.

Sadly, the final match ended up as an extended training session but it should not detract from Adam’s sparkling second half performance – no guessing who won the Man of the Match award!
